Description |
Extremely Rare British Victorian Regiment Flag. The flag is the regimental colors of the 1st European Regiment of Fusiliers. The flag is circa 1840's and is approximately 64" X 53". It is a two-sided example which is made of blue silk and is beautifully embroidered on each side. It is made of multi-piece construction and features eight battle honors, with a small union flag in the canton with the regimental distinction in the center surrounded by a laurel of roses, thistles, and shamrocks. The flag is a beautiful and solid example, which has been professionally netted on each side. There is a little damage to the silk in the upper right corner along the edge, however it is overall very solid and sturdy, with very vivid colors. The regiment has a very distinguished history extending all the way back to the 17th century, which is noted in the write up below. A rare opportunity to own a true and original stand of British Victorian regimental colors. The overall condition is very good. Please be sure to review all photos. W-3
In 1661, Bombay (now Mumbai) became a British possession as part of Catherine of Braganza’s marriage dowry to King Charles II. A year later, the king raised four independent companies to garrison his new territory. When Charles transferred Bombay to the East India Company in 1668, these units were turned into the Bombay Regiment and put under Company control.
In 1751, the regiment was sent to fight in the Second Carnatic War (1749-54), a proxy war fought between France and Britain’s Indian allies in southern India. It later fought in Bengal during the Seven Years War (1756-63), including Robert Clive’s victory at Plassey in 1757. It served at the Battle of Buxar in Bengal in 1764 and was sent to Persia (now Iran) three years later. It was back in India by 1789, where it took part in the Third Mysore War (1789-92) and then in Tipu Sultan’s final defeat at Seringapatam in the Fourth Mysore War (1799). Its next major engagement was the Battle of Khadki (1817) during the Third Maratha War (1817-18).
In 1821, the regiment joined an expedition to Eastern Arabia to defeat the Bani Bu Ali tribe, which was opposing an anti-piracy treaty between Britain and the Arabian sheiks. It returned to the Arabian peninsula in 1839, forming part of the expedition which founded the British protectorate of Aden (now part of Yemen). The same year, it was renamed as the 1st Bombay (European) Regiment to distinguish it from the newly formed 2nd Bombay (European) Regiment, which later became the 106th Foot.
The 1st Bombay (European) Regiment became a fusilier unit in 1844. It served in the Second Sikh War (1848-49), including the Siege of Multan (1848-49) and the Battle of Gujerat (1849). It then fought during the Indian Mutiny (1857-59). As with all other European units of the East India Company, it was placed under the command of the Crown in 1858. Formally marking its move to the British Army, in 1862 the regiment was given the numeral 103 in the line infantry order of precedence. It was also granted the title 'Royal’. It arrived in Britain for the first time in 1871. That year, Queen Victoria’s son Prince Arthur presented it with new Colors at Parkhurst on the Isle of Wight. In 1881, it was merged with the 102nd Regiment of Foot (Royal Madras Fusiliers) - another former East India Company fusilier regiment - to form The Royal Dublin Fusiliers.

Return Policy :
All lots are sold “as is.” A three-day inspection period is standard with all items purchased. Once an item is received by the buyer, you will then have a three day window to notify us that you will be returning the item. The item then must be received by GMAA within 10 days from notification, unaltered and in the same condition as sent to receive a refund.
Any lot viewed by the buyer or anyone on buyer’s behalf prior to the auction may not be returned. This is not an approval sale. All sales of lots to the highest bidder are final. Bidders are strongly advised and encouraged to research any lots upon which they plan to bid, and to determine bids, based upon their own evaluation. Please feel free to contact us prior to the end of sale with any questions that you may have regarding an item offered for sale in the auction. GMAA makes every effort to accurately describe all items offered in its sales.

Shipment of auction winnings usually starts within 14 bussiness days from the close of auction and continues for the next week or two as payments are received. Overseas buyers please note that it can sometimes take several weeks for your item to make it's way through the customs service of your country, which does ad extra time to it's delivery.
Grenadier Auctions strongly recommends insuring the package which contains your winnings. Your invoice will reflect the cost of US Postal insurance, which is the actual USPS cost with no up-charge. If you choose not to insure your package we must receive an email from you stating that you are declining this coverage, as we cannot be responsible for packages which are shipped without insurance coverage.
A special note about third party deliveries. Some overseas customers have requested that their purchases be delivered to U.S. addresses where they sometimes sit for months before being picked up and inspected. Unfortunately in this case we cannot honor the three day inspection period (which begins the day that the items are delivered), as in most cases the consignor has already been paid. We suggest that you perhaps have the receiving party inspect the items for you if possible within the three day period, as items shipped in this manner cannot be returned after the three day period has expired. Grenadier Auctions also assumes no responsibility for packages once they have been delivered to a third party.

GMAA will determine the highest bidder. GMAA, alone, has the right to reopen the bidding for an item, if deemed necessary. Title to all merchandise shall pass to the winning bidder after receipt of good funds by GMAA. Bidders will be held responsible for their bids, including those bids placed incorrectly. PLEASE VERIFY BIDS BEFORE SUBMITTING THEM. In order to have a bid removed or corrected, bidder must contact GMAA prior to start of the auction. Bidder waives GMAA’s responsibility and holds GMAA harmless for failure to recognize, accept, receive or execute any lost or missing bids by internet, telephone, email, mail or other means. GMAA reserves the right to postpone or cancel an auction without notice. Lots may be withdrawn at GMAA’s discretion, without prior notice. Lots may carry a reserve.
